The fashion industry typically separates the design of apparel from that of luggage: the two are developed by different teams with different types of expertise and are sold in separate areas of stores. But why can’t luggage be worn as a garment? The Envelope and The Yoke are two wearable pieces designed to carry clothing and supplies, commissioned by Prada for the spring/summer 2019 collection.
A garment bag is a folding container designed to transport clothing on hangers in order to prevent wrinkling. The Envelope gives the garment bag a double life: utilizing the durability and suppleness of Prada nylon, it protects clothing while in transit and can be worn on the body as outerwear. Utilitarian zippers and adjustable buckles facilitate its metamorphosis from garment bag to raincoat and from shapeless to self-tailored: it is adjustable to all body types. Hidden pockets store a hood and essentials for women who travel light.
Shoulders are the unsung part of the human anatomy — the workhorse supporting the weight of everyday life. Inspired by the shoulder yokes worn by manual laborers — used to balance heavy loads across the shoulders while freeing up the arms — The Yoke is an epaulet of convenience designed to carry sketch pads, sandwiches, and lipstick. This utilitarian, hands-free life vest of sorts can be folded into a handheld clutch and secured by its buckle strap. With The Yoke, women can work dirty and play clean.
