GATE

ART
ON
THE
BEACH,
NEW
YORK

Gate was designed as an entrance structure for Art on the Beach, a temporary sculpture park organized annually from 1978 to 1985 by Creative Time on landfill  from the excavation of the World Trade Center site, which later became Battery Park City. A row of wind socks announces the wind’s direction and speed and marks the border between Manhattan and the artificial ground of the landfill. Gate was a membrane of perforated aluminum sheets and wired-glass transaction windows with a rotating counterweighted canopy roof.
